Timo,

Thank you very much for the timely response.
The information you sent is greatly appreciated.

Sorry about my error in addressing you, I should have
known better. It's been many years since my college days.
Although, that is but a very poor excuse.

(Timo's reply was: No problem, whatsoever. This was just FYI).

> You might wish to upload some of my programs from Garbo

One step ahead of your request...
The night I posted my last letter to you I downloaded all of
your work from the America On Line file directory. I will in
fact upload them to several local BBS's. I have not seen your
work posted anywhere other than on AOL. I find many of you
programs very useful and I know others will also. Besides, I
can always use the upload credits. It's getting harder all of
time to find new or otherwise unknown programs to upload to a
BBS for credits.

At this time, I do not have FTP access on the Internet (just
E-MAIL). AOL has promised FTP sometime in the future. So, I
will not be able to obtain the new version of TSPRN from GARBO.
If it would not be too much trouble... perhaps you could encode
the program and send it to me via Internet E-MAIL. If you wish
to do that, I'd pefer that you addressed it to my alternate
address:
         gardali@bustout.com

I've had better luck un-encoding files obtained from bustout.com
than I have from AOL.

(Timo's reply was: You are in luck. Garbo has a mail server).

Thanks once again,

Richard Gardali

ps...

Now that I know of your works, I'll be looking for them
everwhere I happen to log on.
Keep up the EXCELENT work. BEST WISHES!!

Subject: What is comp.binaries.ibm.pc (Was Re: Read Amiga Disks on PC)

Then comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted is your target, as you'll see below.

:By the way, whats the binaries group for PC binaries. I know that
:alt.binaries.pictures.d is the group for alt.binaries.pictures but there isn't
:a comp.binaries.ibm.pc on my newsgroups list. Any help is much appreciated.

comp.binaries.ibm.pc is moderated by Brian O'Neill cbip@cs.uml.edu.
The newsgroup is for posting MsDos PD and shareware material. The
newsgroup has about 100000 readers. Thus if you are not getting it,
you should contact your local news manager.

The traffic in cbip is rather light, negligible at times, both
because the Brian has much to do, and because the FTP sites and mail
servers can be easily used to obtain a wide range of MsDos files
without the delays inherent in moderated binary newsgroups. I would
say that the distinct role of comp.binaries.ibm.pc becomes from a
preselection of the programs it does for the users and from program
analysis. FTP sites and comp.binaries.ibm.pc are glad to coexist.

But the history dating back to the previous moderators shows a
crucial shift of emphasis from the binary postings in favor of the
FTP systems. In fact, the comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d discussion
newsgroup is in these days virtually without a function because of
the current low comp.binaries.ibm.pc volumes. Most of the time what
is posted to comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d is chronically off-topic.

If you wish to more of the background and the history, you can find
much related information documented in

Furthermore, below please find some further, current information on
the comp.binaries.ibm.pc discussion newsgroups.

This is the charter of the comp.binaries.ibm.pc discussion
subgroups. The charter took effect the 23rd of July, 1991, and is
edited from Bob Sloane's original posting on the cbip
reorganization. Please contact your system manager if you are not
getting all the discussion subgroups.

comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d charter:
The existing comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d is to be used for discussions about
the actual programs posted to comp.binaries.ibm.pc, such as bug reports
(but not articles about missing parts) or requests about how to use the
  programs.

Please do not post your message to cbip.d when
it clearly belongs to cbip.wanted or some non-cbip newsgroup.
Off-topic postings have been unfortunately quite common ever since
the reorganization. Keeping the groups organized is in your own
interest.

comp.binaries.ibm.pc.wanted charter:
This group is to be used to post requests/replies concerning where to
find ibm pc or compatible programs. Topics include requests for
missing parts of binaries posted to comp.binaries.ibm.pc and requests
for specific programs. The newsgroup concerns PD and shareware programs.
The fully commercial programs are covered in comp.os.msdos.apps.

I keep a record, but I am afraid not for of the uploaders'
addresses. What I have is

 31926 May 2 14:37 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/author26.zip
author26.zip Email addresses of 192 MsDos shareware and PD authors

Hence it would be very useful, even important, that the authors
would submit their entries to this list. Likewise if the gentle
uploader is not the author, it would be very useful if the uploader
notified the author of the existence of the authors' address list.

In the case of Windows authors the file to see is

 12970 Apr 18 18:16 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/authwn07.zip
authwn07.zip Email addresses of 65 Windows shareware and PD authors

I have no idea whether this will be of help in the case of
windows/programming/oot-104d.zip, but don't get your hopes too high.

The cause of your problem is easy to see. Both my spelling checking
programs use non-capitalized dictionaries. Thus "Aaron" is
non-acceptable. Use "aaron" instead. Contrary to some other
programs, my spelling checkers are case-independent with respect the

that. Indicentally, the current versions of the checkers are

> I've just read your FAQ and don't understand this term. What's it mean?

> Ike Bottema

Your welcome question is of general interest, so I'll be posting a
copy of this reply to the news.

It is a general terms for a program nagging the user to register or
otherwise persistently reminding her/him with some delay-tactics
that the program is shareware. On Garbo, specifically, the
/pc/UPTEXT.INF recommended announcement formula has an item that
states.

Nagware: Y/N
(Answer Yes if the software displays registration reminders
more than once, or if it requires the user to type in extra
characters which are not necessary in the registered version,
or if it induces delays in the unregistered version.)

Depending on the severity of the nag tactics, some users are put off
by it, and may select to pass the program altogether. As far as
Garbo is concerned, we accepted reasonable nagware, but if the nag
tactics are clearly excessive (I have no definition, but my own
judgment), then the upload might not be accepted at all.

One the other hand one must understand the authors. I am not going
to lecture on morality, and I hope that the eternal question of
registering shareware will not be (again) debated, but my own
position is very clear. Duly observe the shareware rules when you
download material from Garbo.

It the case of Macsee you have to wade through consecutive initial
screen by hitting the enter key some 3-4 before you can start using
the program. This is a very slight form of nag, but a nag
nevertheless. This does not take anything away from the fact that
Macsee is a very fine program.

Incidentally, there are other "wares" in the jargon. Crippleware is
quite a common method on the shareware scene. A crippled program is
a program that does not fully perform all the functions that render
the program useful. Drawing the line is not always easy, but if the
registered version has enhancements, or more capacity than the
shareware version, this does not automatically imply that the
circulated version is crippled. One example is my own tslin34.zip
Linear Programming package which is on the borderline. It is fully
functional handling up to 80*25 matrixes while the registered
version as a capacity of 80*120. The former is quite sufficient for
the ordinary classroom usage, which is the intended usage of this
program.

Some others, besides nagware and crippleware are abandonware,
cardware, charityware, commentware, deadware, demoware,
donationware, expireware, fatware, freeware, guessware, guiltware,
homeware, hostageware, hypeware, malware, payware, reminderware,
shelfware, shovelware, snareware, vaporware, nowhere (just joking)
etc. What each means I'll leave for the gentle readers to ponder.

   All the best, Timo

ctrl-Break, and then TAB as the program says. Simple as that.

Yes, I'll consider that for the solitary player, that is if there is
one player only.

Yes, I can add the /?. Originally in the 1980's the sole ? has been
most prevalent in MsDos programs. /? and /h are newcomers and
reflect somewhat of a Unix influence.

You should have selected two players instead of one. :-) :-)

I am very baffled by this since Ctrl-C and Ctrl-Break should break
the program. I just retested that it works.

Good!

Two reasons why I won't use ESC.
 1) It is too easily hit.

>Hi Timo,

Hello Odd,

>I just uploaded version 1.5 of the book to SimTel, and wondered if
>Garbo is a full mirror site, or if I should upload the book to you
>as well.

Your welcome question includes a popular, but a somewhat unfortunate
confusion about SimTel and Garbo. Neither mirrors the other. We
cooperate closely, for example by having a common mailing list, and
the maintainers of the respective sites also are the moderators of
the comp.archives.msdos.announce newsgroups. But the sites are
totally independent. In particular, we have differing emphasis at
these sites.

The biggest difference between SimTel and Garbo is their scope.
SimTel is much broader, while Garbo specializes. Perhaps the
biggest divergence is that Garbo gathers and carries some FAQ
material which SimTel may not carry like the /pc/pd2/tspost*.zip
feedback postings. Also while the coverage of the two sites may end
up being very much the same, Garbo emphasizes programming and
education since both are in direct interests of its maintainers
Garbo being university funded. Our fundamental goal can be stated
as "The enhancement of skills, rational knowledge and scientific
understanding".

A few months ago I conducted a time-consuming comparison of the
material on the two sites. I was rather taken aback by the result.
I had somehow expected that Garbo would turn out to be a near subset
of SimTel. That turned not to be the case contrary to my
expectations. I don't have the exact figure, but roughly perhaps
almost a fourth of the files on Garbo are not on SimTel. Further
differences between the two sites are that the material we have are
arranged differently, the sites often have somewhat differing,
complementary file descriptions, I think that Garbo may be more
evaluation oriented, and our uploading procedures differ.

Hence, as you see, the question is really is whether the material,
which you would kindly like offer, would fall within Garbo
specializations. Unfortunately, I am rather doubtful in this case,
but if you wish to look into this further, please see the following
files, or ask for them from me by email:

Epilogue: Sometimes I am as wrong as can be, and I have no problem

holds, but I thoroughly misjudged the appropriateness for Garbo of
the offered upload. Thus I later wrote in garbo.uwasa.fi:

As a B.A. in sociology myself, I am constantly fascinated by the
endless creativity that I see in Internet culture, and especially
by the ways people find to express nuances of emotion and
personality in this highly limiting text-only medium. I agree with
you that some serious studies are long overdue. I'm certain that
cultural anthropologists, linguists, and semanticists, as well as
sociologists, would find plenty of interesting research material on
the net. There are some Usenet groups that specialize in these
disciplines, and, I'm sure, many more mailing lists (you're aware,
I'm sure, of the SRI Interest-Groups List of Lists?). A few
well-placed posts to these groups and/or lists could result in
forming the sort of research project you're speaking of. And, it
probably wouldn't be the first time that an international project
    was conducted over the Internet!

    Good luck with it. :)

Just a note to tell you that you do an INCREDIBLE job here! The
subject is due to my replying when I saw you pull a file out of
midair for someone, and it wasn't even a file on your site!

As you have noted in the past (and I share the interest with you),
this information subculture we call Internet certainly bears study
by a sociologist somewhere. And when they do, I am sure they will
notice that we have our dregs, our workers, and our leaders much as
any other societal organization. I feel they will also find you an
outstanding example in the leader category.

Thank you again, both for myself and for the others who stream

Hello Joe,

Frankly, there are no additional benefits. You just will be allowed
to continue using the units as follows. If you wish to use my Turbo
Pascal units in commercial or shareware programs you'll need to
discuss the registering with me. If you use your programs utilizing
the TSPA units for your own, private, non-profit purposes, you do
not need to register. Just go on using them. If you need them for
PD programs that you circulate (you do not charge your own users)
then making a clear attribution in your documentation is sufficient.
You do not need to register in that case either.

If you identify after reading the above that you need to register,
please tell me fully what your intended usage is. Then we can
seriously get back to the question of a price.

TechnoJock's Turbo Toolkits have been withdrawn from Garbo because
of the distribution limitations that were kindly pointed out to me
by an astute user. I appreciate that. Please help us keeping Garbo
material legally bona fide.

Quoted at the end will be an extract from the now deleted

 82260 Mar 8 1993 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/turbopas/ttt51.zip
ttt51.zip TechnoJock's Turbo Toolkit for Turbo Pascal 4.0-7.0

Dear fellow shareware users. Don't you find, like I do, all the
grand pomp and ado about the professed ASP blessings and the
realities of distribution limitations ridiculously contradictory.
Besides what does it mean in legal terms that we "are encouraged to
share freely with others" while "Shareware distribution is permitted
only...". Does all this make any sense at all to you. To me, it
does not!

The read.me file says:
>8. Shareware distribution is permitted only in the United States, Canada,
> England, and Australia.

But it also says:
>You are encouraged to copy the TechnoJock's Turbo Toolkit diskettes and

Hello Jack,

:I enjoy reading your informative posts and answers to user questions.
:They are frequently helpful with situations that I have questions
:about.
:
:I would like a list of the mirror sites for garbo.uwasa.fi, so
:that I can direct some fellow members of an Internet class to
:the nearest one. I remember seeing your posting of these sites

The list of the Garbo mirror sites (as well as the mirror list of a
few other sites) is included in

 18522 May 21 13:52 garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/pd2/moder37b.zip
moder37b.zip A list of MsDos FTP sites and moderators, by TS + RW

As far as I know, there are currently eight Garbo mirrors.

:at some point, but cannot remember which newsgroup I was reading
:at the time (my guess is news.newusers.questions, but I can't be
:certain). Could you either e-mail the list, or point me to the
:proper newsgroup?

Usually, if you have Garbo or other *MsDos* FTP site related
questions the specialized newsgroup to post to will be
comp.archives.msdos.d.

:BTW, I took your recent recommendation of PC ReadMail as a good
:off-line reader and ftp'd it from garbo.uwasa.fi (that's why I'm
:seeking the mirror sites, rather than wasting bandwidth by pointing
:a dozen more people to your server directly). I haven't unZIPped
:the file yet, but look forward to learning how to use an oline

Yes, but note that

Hello Bob,

Thank you for the feedback about my garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/ts/tspa33*.zip.

This is a familiar problem caused by DR DOS. It seems that it
internally handles files and directories differently from MsDos,
just as does 4DOS compared to the vanilla MsDos COMMAND.COM. This
is basically an incompatibility problem which is common and in no
way particular to my own utilities. One (long) discussion about
this both my email and in comp.lang.pascal has once been the
detection whether a file is a directory or not. (The problem also
seems to beset for example batch programming "if not exist %1\nul if
not exist %1nul echo Directory %1 does not exist").

The syntax of this function from garbo.uwasa.fi:/pc/ts/tspa33*.zip is

(* Scroll up a window *)
procedure SCROLLUP (NumberOfLinesToScroll : byte;
                    BlankLineAttribute    : byte;
                    UpperLeftRow          : byte;
                    UpperLeftColumn       : byte;
                    LowerRightRow         : byte;
                    LowerRightColumn      : byte);

The four last give the corners of the region to be scrolled, the
first how many lines to scroll at one go, and the most difficult
second is the color attribute to be used for the blanked area.
Experiment a bit and you'll see how it goes.

I know of no alternative. Everything has to be transferred and
checked. But what the fact that the new PowerPCs that can run
different OSses will bring, I do not know.

The "obvious" you may be missing is that while the transferring can
take time if you have to do it by modem instead of a direct
connection to your PC, the virus checking itself is a fairly
straighforward operation with batches like SCANZ.BAT in

If the application changes the mode, there is nothing that can be

Hello Angus,

You are absolutely right. This is a programming error from my part.
It means that the following routines in tspa33*.zip do not work
properly until if have the time to release a corrected version.

ALTFN Is the alt key depressed
CTRLFN Is the ctrl key depressed
LFALTFN Is the left alt key depressed
LFCTRLFN Is the left ctrl key depressed
LFSHFTFN Is the left shift key depressed
RTALTFN Is the right alt key depressed
RTCTRLFN Is the right ctrl key depressed
RTSHFTFN Is the right shift key depressed
SYSRQFN Is the SysRq key depressed

Thank you very kindly for reporting this problem to me.

Ah, I see. I misunderstood your question because that is not the
most common meaning of "plotting". In my own parlance one plots a

Thanks for the tip. One never can be sure, but I think it in fact
is a leap year, since being divisible by 400 takes precedence over
being divisible by 100 takes precedence over being divisible by four
(yes - no - yes).

Not trusting myself, I just checked also Unix cal and another MsDos
cal. They both show Feb 2000 with 29 days just like my

An open email letter:

Dear Ms. Raskin,

I am on a vacation and unable to verify that this is not a practical
joke, since I would rather like to think it is just that. But I am
a responsible and law abiding msdos FTP site maintainer who does not
like to be summarily accused of illegal activities in public, and I
would very much like to get this resolved one way or the other.

The Garbo MsDos FTP archives are carrying many PC-Magazine utilities
for public distribution. I have missed PC-Magazine having included
a distribution limitations clauses in the vol*n*.zip packages.
Could you please have it shown to me where the distribution
limitations are stated in each of your packages. If there is no
such limitation, to me as a layman this sounds like a retroactive
attempt at limiting the distribution. I doubt that such demands on
FTP sites can be made simply my printing it in a column of your
Magazine.

If you have a legitimate problem with our FTP archive site Garbo
distributing the PC-Magazine programs, please kindly do so by
singling your demand and the grounds for it in writing by a letter
on paper (please see my signature for my address). I promise to
consult a lawyer asap on receipt on the necessity of removing the
PC-Magazine collections from our archives, and take prompt action if
that will be his advice.

Please also be very realistically aware that if this information is
genuine and if indeed you are making such an implicit removal demand
on the FTP sites, it will be, to put it mildly, highly unpopular
with at least a hundred thousand Internet users. (There are 130000
readers in comp.archives.msdos.announce for MsDos upload
announcements). I don't think I need to say more on that aspect for
anyone with a realistic business acumen.

All the best, Timo (So far a PC-Magazine subscriber)

Because of a claim by PC Magazine that it has exclusive rights to the
distribution of their programs on the Internet, the entire /msdos/pcmag

the SimTel Software Repository.

Questions and comments should be sent to PC Magazine, *not* to SimTel.

This will be Garbo's reaction:

We understand that Editor Robin Raskin rraskin@pcmag.ziff.com wrote
in her monthly column of PC Magazine (July 1994, Volume 13 No. 13):

"An archie search (archie definition deleted) turned up 25 locations
where we found our utilities neatly zipped up and ready for illegal
downloading."

Garbo tries its best to be a responsible MsDos FTP site, and we do
not take lightly to such public, retroactive accusations of illegal
activities. For the majority of PC Magazine utilities we were not
aware of any distribution limitations stated within the PC Magazine
packages. This seems an after-fact, monopolistic change of rules.

However, we want to stay clear of all potential controversies. Thus
all PC Magazine utilities have been withdrawn from Garbo, and all
support relating in any way to PC Magazine has been ceased.

If you have any questions or comments please *** DO NOT *** send
them to Garbo moderators! We are out of this as of Sat 16-Jul-94.

   All the best, Timo

To all,

Thank you for taking the time to write regarding PC Mag's distribution
of utilities. The many letters I have received on this subject have
reaffirmed my respect for both the Internet and the power of the written
word.

Let me respond to the closest thing to an original posting I can find:

This message was posted on the SimTel Software Repository :

SimTel's posting is in response to a column I wrote in the July Issue
of PC Magazine (page 30). In that column I wrote about the experiences
PC Magazine had while creating their WWW server. Our server is a
compliment to PC Magazine and a service to you. It is NOT, nor was
it ever, intended to be the sole source of PC Magazine utilities.

Posting the PC Magazine utilities on the Internet is welcome. PC
Magazine utilities can be copied, but are copyrighted. You are free to
make copies and distribute the utilities to others provided no charge is
involved. Making copies or using any portion for commercial purposes is
prohibited.

I am sorry, that because of some unfortunate wording, I may have
inadvertently confused some of the ftp administrators who subsequently
responded by removing the utilities from their repositories. I will
be contacting them individually to help restore their services.

I truly regret any inconvenience or ill-will that the column caused.
You can help me by posting this message anywhere you see people asking
about PC Mag utilities.

Thank you. I have subsequently restored the material to Garbo
archives. I am always pleased about a constructive resolution.

I have rearranged the PC Magazine material at Garbo so that it now
is in two directories. The directories are /pc/pcmagutil and
/pc/pcmagvol with the following descriptions

pcmagutl : Individual utilities and updates related to the PC Magazine
pcmagvol : The volume collections of the PC Magazine
