Beta Release 2.44

README TEXT not yet updated. Contact Technical Support if you have questions not addressed
In this document.

Known Bug for version 2.44:
The ETOOLS Display Device command from the Device menu may disrupt communications with your
floppy drive. If running ETOOLS from drive A: ETools will crash, and you won't be able to
Read drive A: until you reboot your computer.
SOLUTION: Do not run etools from the floppy diskette. Run ETOOLS only from your hard drive
(usually in the VSMOBILE subdirectory)

1. Instructions for DOS/Windows 3.1/3.11 users
===================================

1.1 Installing the MOBILE DISK driver:
---------------------------------------------

Before installing, connect the hardware to your computer
following the instructions in your ValueStor Mobile Disk
or HARD DRIVE transformer owner's manual. Then
select one of the two following procedures to install the unit
      permanently or as-needed.:

See document 5 on the Technical Support web site (the web
address is at the end of this document) if you need
instructions on how to use the DOS drivers under Windows
      95

All DOS procedures refer either to the version 2.39 DOS/OS2
installation diskette or the VSMOBILE sub-directory created
on drive C: by the INSTALL program.

  1.1.1 Permanent installation:

If you want the driver to be loaded automatically each time your
start your computer, put the install diskette in your A: or B: drive.
type INSTALL at the A: (or B:) prompt. Follow the prompts in
the install program, and accept any default settings as they appear.

1.1.2 As-needed installation:

You can also load the driver manually from the DOS command
prompt. Put the install diskette in your A: (or B:) drive and
type IDEDRIVE from the A: (or B:) prompt.

Note: In this case, the MOBILE DISK drivers remain
active only until your system is restarted.

If you use this command in a DOS Window under Windows or
Windows 95, It may not function properly. At best, it will be
effective only within the DOS window.

IDEDRIVE must execute BEFORE Windows 3.XX loads in
order to be in effect during a Windows 3.XX session. If you are
already in Windows 3.XX, exit Windows first. Then run
IDEDRIVE. Finally, start Windows up again.

1.2 ETOOLS application

The ETOOLS application has the following features:

1. Option to scan the parallel ports for the existence of any
ValueStor IDE parallel port products and also report the type of
Super IO card installed in the system.
2. Disk utilities to display the existing partitions, create new
partitions and format them. The ETOOLS partitioning
scheme is based on the DOS FDISK for the maximum
compatibility across all operating systems. These partitions will
be recognized by DOS/Windows 3.X, Windows 95, Windows
NT and OS/2.
3. Option to set driver command line options.

NOTE: Etools automatically runs a Device Information
program on startup. While this screen is up, the pull-down
menus will be inaccessible. Press Esc to get rid of the Device
Information window and gain access to the pull-down menus.

1.3 Partitioning Instructions
----------------------------------
Note: There is no danger of ETOOLS partitioning any hard
drive that is not connected through the parallel port. ETOOLS
will only partition ValueStor parallel port IDE hard disk drives.

Note: ETOOLS works only when the computer has booted up
in DOS mode. You cannot run ETOOLS from a DOS window
under Windows 95, or under Windows NT or OS/2.

To partition a drive, run the ETOOLS program either from the
C:\VSMOBILE directory or from the ValueStor Mobile Disk
software installation diskette.

When Etools brings up the Device Information screen, press
Esc to get access to the pull-down menus.

Press P to pull down the Partition menu

Select Partition and Quick Format from the Partition menu.

Follow all of the prompts that come up, accepting all default
settings until ETOOLS has finished partitioning and formatting
the drive. Use Custom mode unless you have a particular need
to designate the number and sizes of each partition on the drive.
ETools may restart the computer for you, or you may need to
just exit ETools when the process is complete.

1.4 Mobile Disk switch setting options
---------------------------------------------

The following switch options are supported by
VSMOBILE.SYS and IDEDRIVE.BAT. These can be typed in
either capital or lower case. Use these switch options only if
you are having some difficulty that requires them for resolution.
Section 1.4.1 shows how each switch option relates to the driver
settings options in ETOOLS.

1.4.1 Driver switch options:

The Driver settings menu in ETOOLS will be enabled only if

- DEVICE=VSMOBILE.SYS command is present in CONFIG.SYS and
- the file INSFILES.INF is present in the directory where the
ETOOLS.EXE file is located.

You can always change these settings manually by editing the
DEVICE=MOBILE.SYS command line or CALL IDEDRIVE
command line in CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT, respectively.

/E :Slow Down Enhanced Parallel Port Access. Works only
in EPP modes. Slows down the software

/P :Prompts the user to press a key if driver cannot
install. Use when troubleshooting if computer boots
too fast for you to see the error message reported by
the driver when it loads. Helps with troubleshooting

/SF=xx :Reduce Port Access by [1-30]. xx represents any
number from 1 - 30. 30 is the slowest speed.
Equivalent to /E. Use when in any non-EPP mode.
                Slows down the software.

/U :Force Port to Behave as Standard Parallel Port.
Unidirectional mode. The slowest operating mode
selectable. Use only when necessary. Slows down
                the software

/V :Turn Off Burst Mode. For newer model
MOBILE DISK drives and kits without power switch.
Do not use in EPP mode. Slows down the software.

1.4.2 Setting switch options:

Depending on the implementation of your computer parallel
printer port, the VSMOBILE driver may receive inaccurate
data regarding the connection to the parallel port drive. If this
happens, it may be necessary for you to manually adjust the
operating mode of VSMOBILE driver in order for it to work on
your system. Use the switch options for VSMOBILE.SYS for
this purpose. To adjust to these operating modes, you may have
to add options to your IDEDRIVE.BAT command or edit the
CONFIG.SYS file to append the switch options to the
VSMOBILE driver line as shown in the examples below:

Try switch option settings if you see any of the following
problems: Drive not detected, not connected, or not found, data
errors, garbled data, or spurious printing problems.

Always start with the slowest operating mode first - use all
four switches, and then optimize if that fixes the problems.
See section 1.4.3 for instructions as to how to optimize the
switch settings.

If loading the driver in CONFIG.SYS:
 DEVICE=C:\VSMOBILE\VSMOBILE.SYS /U /V /E /SF=30

If loading from AUTOEXEC.BAT:
 CALL IDEDRIVE /U /V /E /SF=30

If loading from a DOS command line:
IDEDRIVE /U /V /E /SF=30

1.4.3 Optimizing switch settings

First, see which switches you MUST have to keep the product
working satisfactorily: Remove each switch, one at a time,
restarting the computer each time to see if your difficulty is
still gone. If the problem comes back, put the option back into
the driver line, and continue trying without the next option on
the line. Once you have tested each switch, leaving out all that
proved unnecessary and putting back in those you had to keep,
you are ready to minimize the /SF switch, if it is needed.

To optimize the /SF switch, set it to 15 and reboot your
computer. If the problem returns, try 22. If /sf=15 works, you
can try 7. Keep playing the Higher/Lower game, each time
picking a number about half-way between the lowest number
that worked (or 30) and the highest number that didn't work
(or 0) Eventually, you'll come to the smallest number that will
work. Don't forget that you must reboot the computer
each time you want to try a new switch option value.

1.5 Drive letter assignment
---------------------------------

MOBILE DISK drives allow you to choose what drive letter will
be assigned if you use the IDEDRIVE.BAT file. There is no
way to do this using VSMOBILE.SYS to load the drivers. The
/L: parameter on your IDEDRIVE command line determines
the drive letter allocated to your MOBILE DISK. To move the
MOBILE DISK to drive E:, add a /L:E parameter, as shown
below:

  IDEDRIVE /L:E

For a permanent installation where you select the drive letter to
be assigned, Follow this procedure:

  First, delete the line:

   DEVICE=C:\MOBILE\MOBILE.SYS

from CONFIG.SYS. Then, add the following lines to
the end of AUTOEXEC.BAT:

  CD\VSMOBILE
  CALL IDEDRIVE /L:X
  CD\

Change /L:X to reflect what letter you want assigned to your
Mobile Disk Drive, as indicated above. Note that if your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file executes any interface or shell programs
such as Windows or DOSSHELL, these three lines must appear
BEFORE the WIN or DOSSHELL command if you wish to be
able to access the drive from within these programs.

1.6 Editing Batch Files
----------------------------

Consult your DOS documentation and On-line help for
instructions on editing .BAT or text files. You can use the DOS
EDIT or EDLIN commands or any text editor to do this.

1.7 Un-installing Mobile Disk
-------------------------------------------

The procedure to un-install depends on whether you did the
permanent installation or the as-needed installation. .

  1.7.1: Un-installing the permanent installation:

To un-install Mobile Disk from the permanent installation,
run INSTALL.EXE from the directory where you have installed
the software and choose the Un-install option. In case you have
deviated from the standard installation in any way (as in
paragraph 1.5 above, for example), you may want to check your
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files to ensure that all
ValueStor command lines have been removed.

1.7.2: Un-installing the as-needed installation:

Simply reboot your computer to restore the system to the
configuration you had before installing the driver using the "as-
needed" procedure.

2. Instructions for Windows 95 users
==========================

2.1 Windows 95 installation instructions
--------------------------------------------------

NOTE: The Windows 95 driver software packages for
ValueStor IDE hard drive and CD-ROM products are identical.
If you have already installed ValueStor Mobile CD-ROM
software for Windows 95 on your computer, it is not necessary
to install this package as well. Simply connect the Mobile Disk
drive to the pass-through port on your Mobile CD-ROM and
restart the system.

CAUTION: You must un-install all previous versions of
ValueStor software before proceeding with this installation.
If you install more than one ValueStor software package at
once it may be difficult to get all versions un-installed (See
notes below for cleaning up conflicting software installations)
Consult the README FILE for the ValueStor software version
in question for instructions as to how to un-install that
particular software version. If you install a particular driver
version more than once, Windows 95 will add additional copies
of the driver each time you run the SETUP program or Add
New Hardware to load the ValueStor driver. You will need to
go to Device Manager and remove the extra copies of the
ValueStor Driver to eliminate the duplicate drive letters from
your system. Consult your Windows 95 documentation for
instructions on using Device Manager to remove device drivers
from your Windows 95 hardware configuration..

UPGRADING: If you want to upgrade your older Mobile CD-
ROM Software to this newer version, use ValueStor Un-install
or Device Manager to remove the Mobile Disk software from
the computer first, and then install this version afterwards.

1. Connect the hardware to your computer following the
instructions in your ValueStor Mobile Disk or hard
      drive transformer owner's manual.
2. Bring up Windows 95 and select Run from the Start menu.
Windows 95 will prompt for the name of the program to
      run.
3 Insert the ValueStor Mobile Disk EP Windows 95/NT
installation disk and type A:\SETUP (or B:\SETUP) and
press ENTER. Follow the on-screen prompts accepting all
      default values.

Once installation is completed successfully, your MOBILE
DISK drive will be ready for use. It will work with virtually any
command you would use on your internal hard drive. Consult
your operating system documentation for instructions as to how
to use the hard drive.

2.2 Drive not recognized

If you have installed everything correctly, you may not see
a new drive letter appear under "My Computer" or "Explorer."
If the drive has never had data on it before, this is often because
Drive needs to be partitioned. See paragraph 2.5 below for
partitioning your IDE hard drive with Swiss Knife.

2.3 Printing through Mobile Disk Issue
----------------------------------------------
(Windows 95 only)

When the ValueStor Mobile Disk and the printer are running
on the same printer port, it may be necessary to pause the
printer when queuing the print job. Once the job is in the print
queue, you can resume printing and let it print out.

Do the following only if you encounter problems in printing.

1. Open Control Panel.
2. Double Click on Printers Icon.
3. Double Click on the icon for the printer that is connected to
the same printer port as your ValueStor Mobile Disk
    device.
4. Go to the Printer menu and select Pause Printing for this
    printer.
5. Go back to your application program and execute the
command to print the document from the parallel port drive
    now.
6. When your application has finished generating the print job,
it will be queued to the printer, which you have just placed
in paused state in step 4.
7. Go back to the Printer menu in the printer window and click
Pause Printing again to resume printing for this printer.
8. Your document will be printed out now.

2.4 SwissKnife application
---------------------------------

The SwissKnife application has the following features:

1. Option to scan the parallel ports for the existence of
ValueStor Mobile Disk or other ValueStor parallel port
devices. Scan will then report the throughput that can be
obtained from the port and also the type of Super IO card
    installed in the system.
2. Attach/Detach option to dynamically attach/detach the
devices on the parallel port without restarting the system
3. CDMount option to manage CD changer drives with a
single CD-ROM drive letter, in case a ValueStor
Mobile CD-ROM product is also installed
4. Disk utilities to display the existing partitions, create new
     Partitions and format them.
5. Option to set driver configuration options.

2.5 Hard Drive Partitioning
----------------------------------

Note: There is no danger of SwissKnife partitioning any hard
drive that is not connected through the parallel port.
SwissKnife will only partition ValueStor parallel port IDE hard
disk drives.

Note: If you have difficulty partitioning your Mobile Disk drive
with SwissKnife, try booting the computer in DOS Mode (this is
an option available on Windows 95s Shut Down menu) and
using the ETOOLS partitioning procedure in paragraph 1.3,
above.

From the Start menu, select Programs/ValueStor Mobile Disk /
SwissKnife.

When asked if you want to Scan for devices, select No.
Pull down the Run menu and select the Partition and Quick
Format option.

In the Partition and Quick Format dialogue box, click on the
Create Partition button.

In the Create Partition dialogue box, click on the Start
button in this dialogue box (do not use the Start button on your
task bar at the bottom of the screen).

Follow all of the prompts that come up, accepting all default
settings until SwissKnife has finished partitioning and
formatting the drive.

The SwissKnife partitioning scheme is based on the DOS
FDISKfor the maximum compatibility across all operating
systems. These partitions will be recognized by DOS/Windows
3.X, Windows 95, Windows NT and OS/2.. Exception: Drives
formatted under Windows 95's OSR2 version (4.00.950B
youll find this under Control Panel / System / Properties) will
set up a FAT32 format partition which can be accessed only by
Windows 95 OSR2. For cross-platform compatibility, do not
partition the drive on an Windows 95 Revision B machine.
Since ease of use and connectivity are the main features of a
parallel port based drive, DOS FAT (File Allocation Table)
format is used to format the drive. SwissKnife will also
recognize several other formats such as, Windows 95Bs
FAT32, Windows NT (NTFS), OS/2's High Performance File
System (HPFS) etc,.
Please note that the partitioning utility of Windows 95 or NT
(FDISK) may not recognize all the partitions created by
SwissKnife. This is due to the fact that Windows 95 and
Windows NT treat parallel port IDE hard drives as SCSI drives,
which partition differently from internal IDE drives. You will
need to choose between FDISK and SwissKnife partition format
and stick to just one or the other. For cross-platform
compatibility, we suggest using the FDISK partition format (the
same as that used by the ETOOLS utility, see paragraph 1.3).

2.6 Driver configuration options
----------------------

Use the driver configuration options only if there is some
problem that requires them. The options can be entered by
selecting the Driver Settings option on the Device menu within
the SwissKnife application.

  Port access options:

Port access options will slow down the operation of the
ValueStor Mobile CD drive in various ways. "Slow down EPP
access" only works if your printer is running in EPP mode.
"Reduce port access" works only when your printer port is NOT
running in EPP mode. Try all relevant options first to confirm
that it IS in fact a performance problem, but use only as many
options as you need to eliminate your difficulty.

  ATAPI CD changer usage option:

Applicable only if a ValueStor CD-ROM product is daiisy-
chained on the same printer port running with this software
package. There are two ways to configure a CD-changer. You
can either assign a different drive letter to each slot or assign
one drive letter to the entire device and change slots associated
with the changer drive letter using the SwissKnife MOUNT
command. The default is to assign drive letters to each slot.
Select "Force CD Changer to behave as a single slot drive" if
you need to have one drive letter for all slots in the changer.

Interrupt usage settings

If you note that the performance seems sluggish, you may have
an IRQ conflict. See paragraph 2.7 to find out what IRQ is
assigned to your parallel printer port. SwissKnife's Scan
command will tell you what IRQ number is selected for the
Mobile Disk software (It would be the same IRQ your printer
port is using.) If the software has the wrong IRQ for your
printer port, this option will let you change the IRQ number to
the correct IRQ being used by your printer port. If necessary,
you can also disable the IRQ usage by the MOBILE DISK
driver. This will cause a small loss of performance, but may
resolve your difficulty.

  Restore/Apply buttons:

If you make a mistake and want to return the Mobile CD
Adapter settings to the previous configuration, click on the
Restore button. To activate the changes you have selected, click
on the Apply button.

2.7 Identifying the IRQ address used by the ValueStor software.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-
Our Windows 95 32-Bit driver is capable of detecting the
printer port IRQ automatically, however in some cases an IRQ
conflict can occur nonetheless. An IRQ conflict will cause
sluggish drive performance.

To find out what IRQ number is assigned to your printer port,
do the following:

1. Make sure that the unit is connected to your parallel port and
    is powered on.
2. Restart the computer and press function key F8 at the
    "Starting Windows
95" prompt to bring up the Windows 95 startup menu.
3. Select "Command prompt only" to boot MSDOS.
4. Run the FINDIRQ.EXE utility from the directory where you
have installed the files (usually C:\VSMOBILE). If you
don't find it on your hard drive, you can always run
FINDIRQ from your ValueStor Mobile Disk EP Win 95/NT
     install diskette.
5. FINDIRQ will display the IRQ number. Please note down
    this number.
6. Restart the computer to bring up Windows 95.
7. Correct the IRQ number in Swiss Knife / Device settings
as described in paragraph 2.6, above.

2.8 DYNAICON APPLICATION
-------------------------------------------

If Windows 95 was started without the parallel port device
connected, the device can be connected dynamically to the port
by running DynaIcon. This application will add the device to
the system. If the driver is already active, DynaIcon has no
effect. To deactivate the driver, use the SwissKnife DETACH
function on the driver menu.

2.9 Remove and reconnect instructions
-----------------------------------------------

REMOVING MOBILE Disk:
If you wish to disconnect Mobile Disk and don't wish to shut
down the computer first, follow this procedure:

A: Make sure any open files from the MOBILE DISK in the
drive are closed. Shut down any applications from the
Mobile Disk and close all open files. If uncertain, simply
      close all open applications altogether.
B. Run SwissKnife from the ValueStor Mobile Disk program
group. Execute the DETATCH selection from the
       DEVICE menu. Close SwissKnife.
C. Disconnect the MOBILE DISK drive from the computer
      now.

RECONNECTING MOBILE DISK If you followed the above
procedure or turned on your computer without the MOBILE
DISK drive connected and wish to connect the drive to your
computer at a later time without having to restart, follow these
steps:

1. Connect the MOBILE DISK drive to your computer, make
sure it is powered and that all connections are secure.
2. Run DynaIcon from ValueStor's Mobile Disk program
group. You are now ready to use your Mobile Disk.

2.10 Backup utility
------------------

Setup creates a shortcut to Microsoft Backup Utility in the
folder. This utility helps you to backup your internal hard disk
into the external drive. If you do not have this utility installed
in your system, install it from the Microsoft Windows 95
installation disk/CD-ROM as follows:

1. Insert your MicrosoftWindows 95 installation disk/CD-ROM
    in the drive.
2. Choose Start - Settings - Control Panel.
3. Double click on Add/Remove Programs.
4. Choose Windows Setup tab.
5. Double click on Disk Tools and choose Backup. Click on ok.
6. Choose Apply button and follow the instructions.

Consult Microsofts Windows 95 On-Line help or Technical
Support for any assistance using Microsoft Backup.

2.11 Un-installing in Windows 95
------------------------------------------

2.11.1 Method 1:
Method 1 will completely remove the ValueStor Mobile Disk
software package from your computer.

From the Start Menu, select Programs, ValueStor Mobile
Disk, Un-install Mobile Disk. Follow the prompts until
un-install is complete.

NOTE: If any additional files have been placed in your
VSMOBILE subdirectory inculding files copied there by
ValueStors DOS INSTALL program the VSMOBILE
directory will not be removed. You can either remove the
directory yourself, or use the uninstall option from the
ValueStor Install utility as noted in paragraph 1.7.

2.11.2 Method 2:

Method 2 will only remove the ValueStor Mobile Disk
device driver from your system registry. This method will not
remove any of the ValueStor software from your computer.

1. On The Start menu, click Settings, and then click Control
    Panel.
2. Double Click on the System icon.
3. Click on the Device Manager Tab. In the category SCSI
    controllers, select the ValueStor driver.
4. Click on the Remove button and follow the prompts to
    complete the procedure.

3. Instructions for Windows NT 3.51/4.0 users
=============================================

3.1 Installation of ValueStor Mobile Disk Parallel Port
Driver for Windows NT
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before installing, connect the hardware to your computer
following the instructions in your ValueStor Mobile Disk
or HARD DRIVE transformer owner's manual. In order to
install hardware in Windows NT, you must be logged in as
      System Administrator.

NOTE: The Windows NT driver software packages for
ValueStor IDE hard drive and CD-ROM products are identical.
If you have already installed ValueStor Mobile CD-ROM
software for Windows NT on your computer, it is not necessary
to install this package as well.

If you install a particular driver
version more than once, Windows NT may add additional
copies of the driver each time you run the SETUP program or
Add New Hardware to load the ValueStor driver. You will need
use the appropriate un-install procedure to remove the extra
copies of the ValueStor Driver and eliminate the duplicate drive
letters from your system. Always use the README file un-
install procedure that came with the software version you are
trying to un-install.

3.2 SwissKnife application
---------------------------------

The SwissKnife application has the following features:

1 Option to scan the parallel ports for the existence of
ValueStor Mobile Disk or other ValueStor parallel port
devices. Scan will then report the throughput that can be
obtained from the port and also the type of Super IO card
    installed in the system.
2. Disk utilities to display the existing partitions, create new
partitions and format them. See secion 3.x below for details.
3 Option to set driver configuration options -- see section 3.4,
    below.
4 CDMount option to manage CD changer drives with a
single CD-ROM drive letter. Available only when a
ValueStor CD-ROM product is attached on the printer port
    with this software package.

Note: Windows NT does not support the Attach and Detatch
features implemented in Windows 95. You will see that these
options are inactive when SwissKnife runs in Windows NT.

3.3 Partitioning Mobile Disk drives
---------------------------------------------
Note: There is no danger of SwissKnife partitioning any hard
drive that is not connected through the parallel port.
SwissKnife will only partition ValueStor parallel port IDE hard
disk drives.

Run the SwissKnife program from the ValueStor Mobile Disk
program group.

When the process is complete, restart
Windows NT as SwissKnife suggests.

The SwissKnife partitioning scheme is based on the DOS
FDISK for the maximum compatibility across all operating
systems. These partitions will be recognized by DOS/Windows
3.X, Windows 95, Windows NT and OS/2.
Since ease of use and connectivity are the main features of a
parallel port based drive, DOS FAT (File Allocation Table)
format is used to put down the partitions. SwissKnife will also
recognize several other formats such as Windows 95, Windows
NT (NTFS), OS/2's High Performance File System (HPFS) etc,.

For cross-platform
compatibility, we suggest using the FDISK partition format (the
same as that used by our ETOOLS utility, see paragraph 1.3).

3.4 Driver configuration options
----------------------
Use the driver configuration options only if there is some
problem that requires them. The options can be entered by
selecting the Driver Settings option on the Device menu within
the SwissKnife application.

3.4.1 Port access options:

Port access options will slow down the operation of the
ValueStor Mobile Disk drive in various ways.

3.4.2 Interrupt usage settings:

The Interrupt usage settings are disabled because the use of
interrupts in Windows NT results in not being able to daisy-
chain your printer. A future release of the software will allow
the user to enable interrupts if they don't mind losing the
printer-pass-through feature.

3.4.3: RESTORE/APPLY buttons:

If you make a mistake and want to return the Mobile CD
Adapter settings to the previous configuration, click on the
Restore button. To activate the changes you have selected, click
on the Apply button.

3.5 Un-installing Mobile Disk
------------------------------------------

Click on the "Un-install Mobile Disk" option from the
"ValueStor Mobile Disk" Folder/Group and follow the
prompts accepting all defaults until un-install is complete.

4. Instructions for OS/2 WARP users
===========================

      your system

4.1.2 Installing Mobile Disk while installing OS/2 on a
system

(Using ValueStor Mobile Disk for OS/2 installation)

1 Make a copy of the OS/2 install Diskette 1 with DISKCOPY
2 Delete the file named AIC7770.ADD from your copy of
    Diskette 1
3 Copy VSMOBILE.ADD from the ValueStor install disk to
your copy of OS/2 Diskette 1.
4 Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on your copy of Diskette 1 to add
     the following line:
             basedev=VSMOBILE.add /v
5 Install OS/2 using the your edited copy of Diskette 1

NOTE: If either of the preceding installation procedures failed
to work, check to make sure that the following lines are in your
CONFIG.SYS file. If they are not, you will need to add them.

      ifs=\os2\cdfs.ifs /q
      device=\os2\mdos\vcdrom.sys
      device=\os2\os2cdrom.dmd
      basedev=VSMOBILE.add /v

4.2 Partitioning Mobile Disk
-----------------------------------

Consult your OS/2 documentation for instructions for
partitioning and Formatting drives under OS/2. If necessary,
you can also connect Mobile Disk to a computer running
another operating system and follow the appropriate
instructions from the appropriate paragraphs above as noted:

  DOS/Windows: See paragraph 1.3
   Windows 95 paragraph 2.5
   Windows NT paragraph 3.3

4.3 DRIVER COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
-----------------------------------------------------

The following switch options are supported by
VSMOBILE.ADD. These can be typed in either capital or
lower case. Use these switch options only if you are having
some difficulty that requires them for resolution.

/E : Disables fast EPP. This applies only for Enhanced
                     Parallel Port (EPP) mode.
/SF=xx : Introduces a delay factor where xx is a number
from 0 to 30 with 30 as the slowest setting.
/U : Forces unidirectional mode. (Applicable only for
                     non unidirectional ports)
/V : Enables verbose mode: Data reported by driver
when loading at boot time will include more detail.
/W : Disables burst mode data transfer for 90C24 and
90C26 chips. Check model number stamped on
main logic chip in your ValueStor hard drive kit.
This option is ignored in Enhanced Parallel Port
                     (EPP) mode.

These options can be added to the following driver line entry in
CONFIG.SYS, For example you can enable verbose mode and
set a slow factor of thirty by adding /V /SF=30 as follows:

      basedev=VSMOBILE.add /v /SF=30

4.4 Un-installing Mobile Disk
-----------------------------------------

To un-install Mobile Disk, remove the following line from
CONFIG.SYS file:

      basedev=VSMOBILE.add /v

(Note that the switch options - any thing following
a forward-slash (/) character - may vary. Always delete
the whole line, regardless of the switch options used. )

5. Notes applicable to all operating systems:
===============================

5.1 Installing drive manufacturer software:
 (Transformer kit customers only)

For customers buying ValueStor HARD DRIVE kit products,
you will note that your HARD DRIVE drive often comes with
its own software package. This software is designed to access
the drive through the IDE interface, and will not work when the
drive is installed in your ValueStor Transformer kit. Please
install ONLY the ValueStor software that came with your
transformer kit.

5.2 Power problems:

Devices that are connected to the Mobile Disk should not be
powered on or off while the Mobile Disk is in operation (when
the drive light is flickering).

5.3. If the computer locks up when installing the drivers or on
reboot; If you dont hear or feel the drive spin up:

Make sure that when you plug the power into the drive that
you can feel or hear it spin up. If the computer locks up when
you install the software or when you reboot the computer after
installing, it is possible the drive isnt spinning up.

Unplug the drive. Open the case, and unplug the ribbon cable
from the IDE drive inside. Then, try plugging in the power
again. If the drive spins up now, it means that you had the
ribbon cable plugged in backwards. Try plugging it in the
opposite way. Often the connector on the drive is keyed so that
you cannot plug the cable in backwards. The other end of the
cable, where it plugs into the ValueStor board is not keyed, so
you can always reverse the cable at this end.

As a rule, the ribbon cable should be plugged in so that the red
wire aligns with the end of the connector that is closest to the edge
of the circuit board. In some rare cases, however, you may find it
necessary to plug the ribbon cable in backwards, with the red wire
at the other end as you plug it in. There is no danger of harming
your equipment if the cable is plugged in backwards.

If the drive fails to spin up regardless of the data cable being
plugged in, you may have a problem with the unit. Make sure
you are using the 16 VAC 1100mA power adapter provided
with the product. If you are using the correct transformer, then
you may need to have the unit repaired.

5.4 When a Printer is connected to Mobile Disk:

Normally, when a printer is connected to a Mobile Disk, the
Mobile Disk will operate regardless of whether the printer's is
on-line or off-line. With some printers, however this may not
be so. If your Mobile Disk is not working right, try unplugging
your printer cable from the Mobile Disk printer pass-through
port.. If that fixes the problem you may not be able to use the
drive while your printer is attached without powering up the
printer and making sure it is on-line.

5.5 Printer port operating modes:

On some computers, you must set the parallel port to a
particular operating mode for the Mobile Disk to operate. While
Mobile Disk does not require bi-directional operation, and can
function effectively on any unidirectional, bi-directional, PS/2,
standard, or EPP printer port, some particular printer ports may
not work well with our software in a particular mode. When
such problems occur, they are particular to the printer port and
not the operating mode used. In such cases, the operating mode
can be changed to accommodate the printer port chip. Note that
in the past, it has occurred that a printer port mode that works
fine in one operating system (DOS, for example) will not work
in another operating system (such as Windows 95)

Computer manufacturers provide various ways to set the
parallel port mode. On laptops or portable computers there may
either be a DIP switch that controls the port mode or a hardware
SETUP program that can change the port mode. If you have a
desktop computer and your parallel port is on a plug-in card,
there may either be a DIP switch or a jumper setting on the card
that controls the port mode. Other desktops have their parallel
ports built-in to their motherboards. In this case, you can often
set the printer port mode in the Hardware setup, CMOS or
BIOS configuration utility provided by the computer
manufacturer. Older computer systems with single mode
printer ports (usually either unidirectional or Bi-directional)
will not have any way to configure the printer port mode. If this
is the case, it may still be worthwhile to know what the printer
port mode is. The computer manufacturer can give you this
information.

5.6 Drive Capacity

The manual reports that the ValueStor transformer kit
supports drives up to 2 GB in size. The truth is that 2.0 GB is
the maximum capacity for a single drive partition under DOS
and Windows 95. The kit itself can easily handle any hard
drive up to 4.5 GB capacity. The software has been coded to
support drives up to 6.5 GB, but these larger drives may not
receive enough power from the Tranformer Kit to spin up to
speed. Also, drives above 4.5 GB may require cooling support
not available in our transformer kit. For these reasons, we can
only guarantee compatibility with drives up to 4.5 GB even
though the kit may work just fine with larger units using
software version 2.37 or higher.
