SyQuest drives with MS-DOS 6.0

MS-DOS 6.0 has a few new options compared to the previous
DOS 5.0. One of the newer options will cause confusion to the
users. The major contributor to user confusion will come from the
drive ID letters assigned to the Winchester drives by DOS 6.0 after
DOUBLESPACE (DBLSPACE) is run to compress the data on the fixed or
removable disk drives. The DOS 6.0 also requires the latest SyQuest
device drivers for both the SCSI and ATA SyQuest drives. The SCSI
version SyQuest utilities must be release 2.74 or greater (BETA
version is now under test). The ATA version SyQuest driver must be
version 1.36 or greater (BETA version is now under test). If you
have three SyQuest drives on your PC system such as C: SQ3105A (ATA
Master drive); D: SQ5110C (SCSI Unit 0) ; and E: SQ3105S (SCSI UNIT
1) under DOS 5.0 and you install DOS 6.0 on the boot device, all
drive letter IDs will stay the same. DOS 6.0 and the SyQuest drives
will all look and act like DOS 5.0 with no problems. When you run
the DOS 6.0 compression utility DBLSPACE, some initial confusion
will occur. The SyQuest cartridges can be DBLSPACEd to basically
get double the storage on your cartridges. Using this utility also
will require the user to be more sophisticated with its correct
usage. Listed below are some suggestions to correctly use the
SyQuest drivers with the DOS 6.0 DBLSPACE compression formatted
cartridges.

	1. To run the DOS 6.0 SETUP program on any drive, you must
first REMark out the SyQuest driver. After DOS 6.0 is installed on
your booting drive the SyQuest driver can now be edited into the
CONFIG.SYS file.

	2. Older SyQuest device drivers (ABOVE version 2.40) will
work with DOS 6.0 if DBLSPACE is not used on the cartridges.

	3. If the users uses DBLSPACE on the cartridge, you must
also update the SyQuest device driver to the latest version.

	4. If you have a SyQuest drive as the bootable C: drive,
you must remark out the SyQuest device driver and reboot your system
before you can run DBLSPACE on your SyQuest cartridge drive. If the
SyQuest drive is not the booting drive, then the driver should not
be REMarked out to compress your cartridge.

	5. After you run DOS 6.0's DBLSPACE and MEMMAKER to
optimize your systems memory, or if you edit your CONFIG.SYS to
install the DBLSPACE driver, you MUST make sure DBLSPACE is
inserted after the SyQuest driver or the Drive letter IDs assigned
by DOS will not be consecutive like under DOS 5.0.

EXAMPLE:
   	DEVICEHIGH /L:1 ,17936 =\SYAT136\SYATDRVR.SYS
	DEVICEHIGH /L:1 ,24816 =\SY274\SYDRIVER.SYS
	DEVICEHIGH /L:1 ,44496 =C:\DOS\DBLSPACE.SYS /MOVE

	6. If you want to change a DBLSPACE cartridge, you must
return to the DOS prompt and run DBLSPACE /unmount X: (where X is
drive ID of cartridge drive) EX: C> DBLSPACE /unmount X:

	7. If you are replacing the cartridge with another
DBLSPACEd cartridge, after the drive has spun up and is ready, at
the DOS prompt type: DBLSPACE /mount X: X= ID of drive with
changed cartridge The software will install the compressed volume X:
drive and its uncompressed HOST-for-X volume drive letter ID. If
you do not perform the mount and unmount utility, an error will be
displayed from the device driver to replace the cartridge with the
original cartridge. Typing a F(ailed) at the error message will
allow the system to continue with the new FATs being loaded, but it
is NOT advised due to MURPHY being alive and well. If the cartridge
installed is an uncompressed (non-DBLSPACE) cartridge, it is not
necessary to mount the cartridge with DBLSPACE. But be advised the
drive ID normally assigned to the DBLSPACEd HOST-for-X is not
available any more. The BOOT VOLUME C: can NOT be unmounted this
way. If your SyQuest drive is the boot device and you wish to
change DBLSPACE cartridges, you must run the new SyQuest utility
UNMOUNTC.EXE to unmount C:. This utility is provided in the SyQuest
utilities release 1.36 (AT) and 2.74 (SCSI) and above. Also, to
remount the cartridges, you must have a copy the DBLSPACE files in
the uncompressed area of the cartridge (HOST-for-C volume). The
COMMAND.COM file also must be in the directory specified by the
SHELL command in your CONFIG.SYS. If these steps are not done, the
system will not reload correctly and the operator will have to
reboot their system.

	8. SMARTDRV will also give you cause for concern under DOS
6.0 if you use DBLSPACE cartridges. SMARTDRV automatically enables
WRITE CACHE on compressed volumes. However, if at the time you load
SMARTDRV, the compressed volume is not mounted, the SMARTDRV will
not enable the WRITE CACHE even after you mount your DBLSPACE
cartridge(s). Follow the following procedure for your CARTRIDGE
drive:
1. Before you load SMARTDRV, unmount your removable volumes.
2. Load SMARTDRV.
3. Mount the removable volumes.
Write cache will not be enabled on your compressed SyQuest
cartridge, so changing your cartridges will not cause any problems.

EXAMPLE: Place in your autoexec.bat file D: is the SyQuest
cartridge drive
\dos\DBLSPACE /unmount D:
\dos\SMARTDRV
\dos\DBLSPACE /mount D:

If you do not follow this procedure then you must disable
SMARTDRV for the cartridge ID BEFORE you change a cartridge ( issue
disable for cartridge ID for the HOST-for-X drive ID). If you do
not disable SMARTDRV for the cartridge's HOST-for-X (EX: SMARTDRV
G- the HOST-for-X cartridge) and you change your cartridge, you
will NOT be able to continue, as an error message will be displayed
by our driver invoking an invalid media change. You must reboot
your system before continuing. Remember after you disable SMARTDRV
for the cartridge, also remember to DBLSPACE /unmount X: before
removing cartridge. If you do change DBLSPACEd cartridges a lot,
you can also not use SMARTDRV on the cartridge drive. EX:
PLACE SMARTDRV X- in you autoexec.bat file. This will not
allow caching on the X: SyQuest cartridge drive. SMARTDRV will work
without any problems if the cartridges are NOT DBLSPACEd as SMARTDRV
will only enable READ CACHE on removable volumes.

	10. Parallel to IDE/SCSI Products are not accessible when
CONFIG.SYS is processed. So volumes must be mounted after the
PARALLEL DRIVER software is loaded.

	11. To prepare a new cartridge under DOS 6.0, the latest
version of the S _PREP program is needed or the cartridge can not be
made bootable. A work around until you receive the latest version
SyQuest driver software is to use the DOS's SETVER driver to tell
the PREP program that DOS is version 5.
EXAMPLE: SETVER SYPREP 5.00

	12. Remember a lot of Utilities, DRIVERS, and SOFTWARE will
NOT be DOS 6.0 Compatible. Murphy is alive and well. Take caution!!
